A prayer for me from the 4th grade class at St. Mary’s School, Middlebury

I have been pondering this prayer today. The 4th graders have really put quite the challenge in front of me: they have hit the nail right on my head, so to speak. Its not so much the thankful words that they offer for my having been named bishop of Burlington although I do thank them in return for their kindness (goodness knows I know myself well enough in my own humanity and sinfulness to not get a big head). Its the other things they ask God to help me do: make me a holy servant, a teacher of the works of the Lord, one who makes good decisions, one who lets my faith spread to others, to be one who comforts. I find myself saying, “I hope so, I hope so.” And so do I I pray as well …

“Thank you God for Bishop Coyne.
May you make him holy as a servant to you.

His character shines even on a cloudy day.
Let him teach us the works of the Lord.
Make his decisions strong and powerful.
Let his faith spread throughout the world.

Help him to comfort those less fortunate and bless the poor in spirit.
Thank you God for giving us Bishop Coyne and let him be a strong bishop of the Diocese of Burlington.”

Signed, Scarlet, Anna, Emma, Wyatt, Opal, Alice, Liam.
Payton, Patrick, and Mrs. Abbot

How sweet! May our Lord bless each and everyone of those young Catholics and their families.

Would that we all could pray with such sincerity and innocence.
“…The kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Mk 10: 14-15

We are so blessed to have you here in Vermont. Praise God!
Thanks for being our leader in the public forum, especially your timely work at the legislature this past week. And of course, thanks for being real to our children.

God bless our little children. They are so precious and smart. Thank you for being there for them and yes, you make a perfect Grandpa!

Our children show us the way. May I as an adult, then, revert to childhood and its simplicity of faith and love as a way to serve Christ, his Bishops and his Kingdom.
